Heavy rainfall swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday morning, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several parts of the national capital. The weather department warned that intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely to continue until at least noon.
Neighbouring cities also remained under weather alerts. While Noida and Ghaziabad have been placed under an orange alert with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms forecast, Gurugram and Faridabad are under a yellow alert, where light showers are expected over the next few hours.
Red alert for multiple areas in Delhi
The IMD has sounded a red alert for North East Delhi, Central Delhi, South East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi and Shahdara, warning residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with lightning activity.
Gurugram Police urge companies to allow employees to work from home
In view of the persistent rainfall and the possibility of severe traffic congestion, Gurugram Police has appealed to corporate offices and private organisations to allow employees to work from home wherever possible.
The advisory aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, making it easier for traffic personnel to manage congestion while ensuring emergency vehicles can move without obstruction.
Explaining the move, Gurugram Police Public Relations Officer Sandeep Turan said, ‘We strongly urge the corporate sector and private establishments to extend the work-from-home facility to their employees for today. Reduced traffic on the roads will help our traffic management teams regulate vehicle movement more effectively and ensure uninterrupted access for emergency services.’
Authorities monitor situation
Officials are closely monitoring the weather as rain continues across the region. Residents have been advised to follow the latest IMD updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and slow-moving traffic.
