Mumbai Rains Live Updates: Heavy rainfall continued to lash Maharashtra on Monday, disrupting normal life across Mumbai, Pune and nearby districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with strong winds. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
In view of the worsening weather, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) advised private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home. It also announced a half-day for employees working in non-essential and semi-government offices to reduce travel during the severe weather.
Why were Mumbai-Pune train services suspended?
Heavy rain triggered multiple landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section, forcing the suspension of train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune railway route. Railway officials said one landslide occurred near Thakurwadi, while another took place between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3.05 am.
All three railway tracks in the ghat section were affected, leading Central Railway to cancel, divert and regulate several long-distance trains. Passengers have been advised to check the latest train status before travelling.
What rain-related incidents claimed lives in Mumbai?
The heavy rains also led to several tragic incidents. A three-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night, killing at least six people and injuring one. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), continued operations as one person was feared trapped under the debris.
In separate incidents, two people, including an 18-year-old and a senior citizen, died after trees collapsed due to strong winds and heavy rainfall. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), more than 200 complaints of tree and branch falls were received across the city overnight.
